Owner of Panthers, Charlotte FC lands on ‘richest Americans’ list

CHARLOTTE — The wealthiest people in the country continue to amass more money, and a prominent figure in the Queen City is no exception.

According to the Forbes 400 ranking of the “Richest People in America” released yesterday, David Tepper, the owner of the NFL Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC soccer team, saw his net worth jump about 21.5% from this time last year.

Tepper came in at No. 49 on the 2021 ranking, which is based on stock-price data from Sept. 3. Forbes estimates his net worth at $15.8 billion, up from $13 billion when last year’s ranking was released. As noted in the Buzz, he came in at No. 41 on the 2020 list.

But even his double-digit gain in wealth is modest compared to others on the list.

“The wealthiest Americans collectively saw a 40% increase over last year and nearly all are richer than they were last year,” said Kerry A. Dolan, assistant managing editor, wealth at Forbes, in the feature’s introduction.
