CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sobbing and at times almost seemingly unable to go on, Javon Sherwood’s mother testified in court Thursday in hearings for two of the three men accused of killing her son.
She told of how she spent more than two decades raising her son to be a good man. She spoke of how she took him to church regularly.
In the end, her sorrow too great, June Sherwood was led from the courtroom sobbing.
Javon Sherwood was killed at the Belle Haven Apartment Homes on Autumn Lake Court on Dec. 1, just days before he was set to turn 22.
Javon’s father, Herman, also spoke Thursday, detailing the conscientious nature of his son.
On Thursday, 23-year-old Khalil Dante Capers pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill. He was sentenced to what amounts to time served -- Capers has been in jail since December -- with three years' probation.
Also Thursday, a judge set bond conditions for 19-year-old Keith Bryson Powell. A judge ruled Powell could live at his mother’s home in Guilford County under 24-hour house arrest while legal proceedings are ongoing if he makes his $200,000 bail.
Powell had about two dozen family members, many of them who drove from his hometown of Greensboro, to tell the judge that he should be allowed to get out of jail while he is waiting for his case to go to trial.
Powell was a student at UNC Charlotte and was arrested in his dorm room days after the murder last year.
Prosecutors say it was Powell who shot Sherwood at point-blank range.
The third person arrested for Sherwood’s murder is 25-year-old Yocouba Meite. He is set to appear in court next month.
