Participants leave scathing comments on Concord High School survey

CONCORD, N.C. — Miserable teachers and allegations of grade inflation are just some of the claims made in a staff survey at Concord High School.

The internal survey and results were sent to Channel 9 in hopes of bringing some of the issues to light.

The survey was given out by a committee tasked with improving Concord High School's culture, and reveals 91 of about 116 school staff participated.

On the survey, the culture committee was described as part of the School Improvement Plan.

Channel 9 found more information about that plan on the school's website.

In it, staff describes school leadership as a dictatorship and a place with no support for teachers.

"Teachers are demoralized," one staff member wrote.

"The admin team make your life a living hell," another staff member wrote

"The staff walks around wondering who will be called in next and for what infraction, including not passing students who earned non-passing grades and being mandated to change them to passing,” one commented.

Those are the same concerns and allegations Judy Kidd of the Classroom Teachers Association of North Carolina said she's heard from teachers.

"They're not happy. They're looking to leave. I would anticipate there's going to be a mass exodus from that school," she said.

"Please be assured that any complaints are investigated in accordance with board policy,” Cabarrus County Schools officials said in a statement. “Because these concerns may involve personnel action taken by (the) administration, the district is not at liberty under General Statute NC 143-318.11(a) to discuss this with the public."
