Police identify man hit, killed by train in Plaza Midwood

CHARLOTTE — Police have identified a man who died after being hit by a train Wednesday morning in Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood.

The incident happened just after 3 a.m. on the train tracks along Louise Avenue, just north of East 10th Street.

On Thursday, investigators said 44-year-old Carvoia Patton was lying between the tracks when he was hit by the train. Police said the train’s conductor and engineer sounded the horn several times and tried to slow the train down but Patton never moved.

Detectives said they think Patton may have been impaired but toxicology reports are pending.

Channel 9 crews could see police with flashlights walking along the train tracks and freight cars of the stopped train, looking for clues. Half a dozen patrol cars and a CMPD crime scene van were on the scene.

The investigation also impacted traffic on Central Avenue, which was closed between Pecan Street and Hawthorne Lane. The train started moving again around 6 a.m. and the road was also reopened.
