MONROE, N.C.,None — A pharmacy owner in Union County is making drastic changes in store security after two break-ins in two months.
Police said a thief smashed a drive-through window and stole thousands of dollars of oxycodone at the Medicap Pharmacy on Highway 74 over the weekend.
The latest burglary follows a similar incident in August.
Owner Alan Kennedy said he is now stepping up security by adding surveillance cameras and bulletproof glass. Kennedy also believes the thief is a former customer, so the store has a new procedure for prescription pickup.
"We're fingerprinting every customer that comes in with a prescription for Class 2 narcotics," Kennedy said.
Kennedy is also offering weapons training for his mainly female staff.
Pharmacist Dana Mullis told Eyewitness News she is pursuing a concealed-carry permit and taking gun courses.
"I may be young, I may be little, but I'm doing what I need to do to protect myself," Mullis said.
Police said they are beefing up patrols in the area and have an investigator actively working the cases.
Anyone with information should call Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
