CMPD Generic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say alcohol impairment and excessive speed were contributing factors in a deadly single-car crash late Sunday night.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. near Sardis Road North.

Officers were called to the area after getting reports of a car that had run off the road and crashed into a utility pole. When officers got there, they found a 2018 Hyundai Tucson with front-end damage, a damaged utility pole and power lines down across the road.

The driver, 71-year-old James Webster, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation indicated Webster was driving on North Sardis Road when the car left the roadway onto the grass shoulder and struck a utility pole.

Webster was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Authorities believe alcohol impairment and excessive speed were contributing factors in the collision.

No other information has been released.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
