SPENCER, N.C. — Police in Spencer, N.C., say they believe speeding was a factor in an accident that killed six people, including three children, Friday night.
Angela Dunlap, 28, was driving the SUV with eight passengers when she lost control and slammed into a tree, police said. Dunlap was killed in the accident, along with two of her children, Da'Ja Cathcart, 10, and Taliah Williams, 8. Karizma Sexton, 4, Sean Jacobs, 25, and Vincent McNeal, 46, were also killed.
Dunlap's twin sons, Davion and Javion Williams, 6, survived along with another 10-year-old boy.
Salisbury police are helping reconstruct the accident, which happened on a winding, dipping, stretch of Rowan Street between Salisbury and Spencer.
Police say Angela Dunlap had traveled that road many times before Friday night, and they don't know what may have caused her to lose control and slam into a tree, but they are quite sure of one thing.
"In my opinion, the vehicle was exceeding the posted speed limit of 30 miles an hour," Spencer Police Chief M.T. James said Monday.
James says they are waiting for other evidence, including toxicology reports, before finishing their investigation.
A memorial has continued to grow along the side of the tree where Dunlap's car came to rest and where friends and even strangers have come to mourn.
"I know those little children have gone to heaven, God has them ... God has them. They don't know what hit them, but God has them in his bosom," said Nettie Hopkins as she choked back tears.
For Frances White, it was more personal. Dunlap and her children had lived next door.
"They were just sweet. They never came out the door when there wasn't a smile," White said.
