2 arrested in connection with teenager's death in Rowan County

SALISBURY, N.C. — Two people were arrested after a teenager died from a shooting in Rowan County.

Talib Latrell Kelly, 17, was arrested and charged with felony involuntary manslaughter. Joseph Daquan Scott, 20, has been charged with making a false police report.

Deputies said Kelly and Tyjuan Jaquar Gibson were with several other teenagers on Thursday at Scott’s home, where a gun was discharged and struck Gibson.

Kelly and another person took Gibson to the hospital in Scott’s vehicle, according to deputies.

Gibson, 19, died of his gunshot injuries at the hospital.

Deputies said Scott falsely reported his car stolen to a Rowan County sheriff’s deputy.

Investigators found a 12-gauge pump shotgun hidden in the woods behind the home and located Scott’s vehicle abandoned near one of his relatives' home on Vanderford Street.

Another handgun was taken by deputies from a home on Institute Street, which deputies said was removed from the crime scene after the shooting.

Rowan County sheriff's deputies initially said they responded to a hit-and-run around noon on Lincoln Avenue, while Salisbury police were called to the hospital around the same time.

Officers then determined the calls were related.

Deputies said more arrests are possible.
