Police increase reward for information more than year after Charlotte teen found dead

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police announced a $10,000 reward Thursday for information in the death of 18-year-old Shania Hammond.

Hammond was found dead outside an east Charlotte home on Willowgate Lane in February 2017.

Initially her case was labeled a death investigation, because the medical examiner’s office couldn’t determine how she died. It’s now being called a homicide investigation.

Police said they reviewed the case in February of this year and were not satisfied with how it was being handled. They decided to reassign it to a different detective.

On Thursday, officers, along with Hammond’s mother, asked anyone with information about the teenager’s death to come forward.

Police have increased the reward from $5,000 to $10,000 in the case.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide unit detective. The public can also call CrimeStoppers at 704-334-1600.
