Police: Armed man shot, killed by officer at hospital in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — An officer shot and killed an armed man outside a hospital in Mooresville on Wednesday morning.

The Mooresville Police Department was called around 3:45 a.m. to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center because a man told hospital staff he was planning to “do harm to himself” in his car in the hospital parking lot.

Police said hospital staff saw the man put a gun into his pocket before he left the hospital.

When they arrived, Mooresville officers saw the man in the parking lot outside his car holding a gun. After officers told him several times to drop the gun, the man initially put the gun on the ground, police said.

Police said the man picked up the gun again and “posed a threat to officers.” In response, an officer fired their gun five times, hitting the man multiple times, according to the police department.

The man was identified as Robert William Berry, 56 of Mooresville. He died from his injuries.

The officer who fired the gun was put on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident along with an internal investigation by the Mooresville Police Department.

Around 10:30 a.m., a Channel 9 crew could see that officers were still at the scene investigating.

Police plan to share more information in a news conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
