Police search for man after women groped in east Charlotte park

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in east Charlotte are focusing on a park where they believe a man has been targeting women — exposing himself to at least one victim and sexually assaulting another.

The incidents over several months at Sheffield Park off Central Avenue have happened in the afternoons while young women were walking in the park.

One woman told Eyewitness News she was in the park with her two small children in January when the man pushed her to the ground and grabbed her backside with both hands.

She said she was afraid, but managed to get up and call for help.

She described her attacker as a short Latino man in his mid-20s or early 30s, the same description another woman gave police of the man who exposed himself to her in October.

“We of course take this all very, very seriously,” said Lt. Christian Wagner of CMPD’s Eastway Division.

Police set up cameras in the park hoping to spot the suspect but were unsuccessful.

Wagner said they are still watching the park carefully.

“The officers in this area know what's happened and they're aware that that's an area they need to be patrolling and staying in when they're not responding to calls,” Wagner said.
