CONCORD, N.C. — A man is facing charges after a deadly car accident involving alcohol, Concord police said.
Steve Sankar, 24, was driving southeast on Central Heights Drive Saturday morning when his 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo drove off the road and hit a tree, police said. The car rolled over and the passenger, Devon Hemmingway, 23, was thrown from the car, according to officials.
The accident happened just past the Kiser Woods Drive intersection at about 1:35 a.m., officials said.
Hemmingway, a resident of Tabor City, was taken by Cabarrus EMS to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast and was pronounced dead. Sankar, a resident of Concord, was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries and has been released.
Concord police charged Sankar with felony death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and disorderly conduct. He is under a $250,000 bond in the Cabarrus County Jail.
