GASTONIA, N.C. — Police are investigating after $6,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a Gastonia church.
Authorities said the suspect broke into the church attic sometime after a gathering at the New Generation Harvest Church last Wednesday.
Pastor Curtis Carter said there are bars on the windows and extra locks on the doors. Now, he is wondering how to secure the ceiling.
"We were thinking the way we have the church secured, we would never have a break-in," Carter said. "Somebody really wanted to get in there."
Carter said he hopes the thief or thieves will become as determined to seek salvation as they were to steal from God.
The suspect took speakers, a camera, and most of the equipment used to record and post church services.
Carter said he believes the thief wanted money.
Officials said several envelopes were found open Saturday night and all envelopes were empty -- there was not any money to take.
Carter said the church forgives the thief, but still believes the suspect needs to face punishment required by law.
"We forgive you," Carter said. "We hope you get whatever help that you need."
The pastor said the church trustees decided to open for Sunday service, despite the fact members would see the area disturbed by the thief.
The crime scene investigator came to the church and police dusted for fingerprints on the vent over the sanctuary Monday.
