Woman reportedly robbed, sexually assaulted at gunpoint in broad daylight near uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a woman reported she was robbed and sexually assaulted at gunpoint along a walkway to Frazier Park near uptown Charlotte Sunday evening.

It happened just after 5:30 p.m. on McNinch Street, near West Morehead Street and blocks away from popular uptown areas like Bank of America Stadium and Romare Bearden Park.

CMPD Sgt. Ali Rooks said the crime that happened there is “extremely rare.”

“Obviously, one sexual assault is too many,” Rooks said. “But in this particular case, this (was in) broad daylight on a Sunday in a public park.”

Police said when they got to the area, they spoke to a 25-year-old woman, who reported a suspect approached her and started a conversation before he showed her a gun and demanded her belongings.

The suspect then sexually assaulted her, according to CMPD.

Police only provided a vague description of the man. He was wearing a white or gray shirt and dark pants, which were dirty, at the time.
