New effort aims to provide job search help

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Inside Nations Ford Community Church, Teresa Roberson sat in front of a computer, getting one-on-one help in a job search that's gone on for a year and a half.

“I'm glad that they're making these resources available because I've spent a lot of time just riding around with resumes,” Roberson said.

Roberson was surrounded Monday by community leaders, including the mayor, showing off new job training sites that are part of an effort called Charlotte Works.

“We're working with churches and houses of worship and community centers to place these sites where people already go,” Mayor Anthony Foxx said.

Spreading out locations where the unemployed or underemployed can find computers and coaching and contacts is a key part of the Charlotte Works vision.

Already, agreements have been reached to open 17 sites all over town, where people like Pastor Phillip Davis are getting the word out.

“We try to make certain that members and their network of friends understand that these opportunities are here,” Davis said.

Two other, bigger locations on Morehead and Freedom Drive will offer even more help and training.

All of it, the mayor said, is closer than ever to the people who need them most.

“Having those opportunities and those assets near where they live so they don’t have to get on a bus or catch a ride from a friend is very important to our future,” Foxx said.
