Deputies say Caldwell County shooting was likely a murder/suicide

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC — Caldwell County deputies investigating a double fatal shooting on Brookview Place south of Lenoir say it's believed to be a murder/suicide.

Victoria Kirby was taking her cat to the veterinarian when a woman ran out of the home covered in blood.

"She had blood on her leg and on her hands, and she was saying it was someone else's blood and some people were arguing,” Kirby said.

Sheriff deputies confirmed a 72-year-old man and 72-year-old woman were found dead inside. They said he likely shot her with a handgun and then shot himself.

A neighbor across the street said the couple got married four months ago after finding each other on social media.

The woman had moved from New Jersey and that's when they exchanged vows.

"They went to school together,” neighbor Elizabeth Hurley said. “They found each other on Facebook and decided to get married, so he went to New Jersey and got her and brought her here."

"He said if this one didn't work, he was going to give it up," neighbor Gracie Moony said.

Sheriff Alan Jones said deputies recently had been called to the home for a domestic situation.

"The investigation is ongoing and it's going to take time for us to figure out,” Jones said.
