CORNELIUS, N.C. — Mecklenburg County leaders will receive a complete review of how the county's first public beach fared during its opening season.
New numbers out Tuesday morning revealed that Ramsey Creek Park Beach at Lake Norman had about 70,000 visitors from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Shortly after the beach opened, the county decided to fix parking and traffic issues by offering CATS buses to shuttle visitors. It cost the county $258,000 for the buses, police and staffing.
The park brought in roughly $117,000.
The county plans to reduce the cost next year by lowering the number of buses after July 4th and having fewer off-duty police officers at the beach.
County commissioners will vote Tuesday night on improvements to another part of Ramsey Creek Park.
The “Patriot Military Family Foundation" and the town of Cornelius are donating a total of $30,000 to improve the fishing pier by making it more accessible to people with disabilities.
