Restaurant closing as Charlotte's development boom creeps outward

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A longtime eatery that was once off the beaten path is closing soon as new development creeps farther from center city and into Charlotte's close-in neighborhoods — but patrons won't have to go far to find their favorite dishes. A sign at the Gardenia Restaurant, a small diner near the intersection of Alleghany Street and Freedom Drive, indicates it is merging with Beauregards Restaurant, a sister establishment less than a half-mile away.

The Gardenia has operated there for nearly 30 years.

"We signed the lease right after Hugo," said Paul Labrakis, whose family is behind both ventures, in a reference to the hurricane that caused widespread destruction here in September 1989.

He expects the property to be sold for redevelopment.
