SBI investigates after shots fired into Long View PD headquarters

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Law enforcement in Catawba County is investigating after they said someone fired shots into the Long View Police Department headquarters Monday evening.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty reported that the fire captain was outside the building when it happened and described hearing three shots as he took cover.

Nobody was hurt.

"It's really a shame that we've come to this,” Long View fire Chief James Brinkley said. “We're out here trying to protect and serve and we got someone out here trying to harm us."

Police have recovered one of the slugs and said the SBI was on the way to Long View to help with the investigation.

One bullet that struck left a hole on the siding at the police department.

"I'd like to know who done it. Why? Because this is a serious incident,” Long View police Chief Mike Winters said.

Winters said he isn't sure why someone would target police headquarters, but said a recent narcotics crackdown is a possibility.

Channel 9 was at the scene where police were searching a nearby laundromat after a man reportedly hid a bag in a trashcan after the shooting.

"Very, very nervous,” resident Joyce Winkler said. “He tied it real tight and put it down in the trash can."

District Attorney David Learner came out to see the damage and issued a warning for the person responsible.

"We're coming after then, very simple,” Learner said. “We're not gonna tolerate stuff like this in our community. There's no excuse for it."

No suspect information has been released.
