ROCK HILL, S.C. — South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley stopped in Rock Hill Monday. She appeared at a celebration for the opening a business that just moved to York County from Charlotte.
"You have decided on an amazing community. An amazing community," Haley said. "This is one that will never let you down."
As Haley touted the business-friendly atmosphere of the state, executives at physician's choice lab services, or PCLS, talked about why they moved their headquarters, and 250 employees from Charlotte to rock hill. PCLS is a medical lab company that does drug testing.
"We needed a commitment. We needed a commitment from an area that really wanted us to be there," said company president Phil McHugh.
Mchugh said incentives were a big part of the draw to South Carolina. They include; job development tax credits, reduced property taxes and other factors.
Local chamber of commerce officials told channel nine that the percentage of businesses moving from Charlotte to South Carolina is still small.
However, those companies are finding room to grow, add jobs and add to the tax base.
Four years ago a marketing company called red ventures moved from Charlotte to Lancaster County. It's still expanding, and is expected to grow to more than 2,000 workers.
McHugh said York County helped South Carolina seal the deal by having available land that the company could move to quickly, within a year.
Shutterfly, which just opened in fort mill, and excel, which broke ground in rock hill, are two larger companies bringing hundreds of jobs to York County.
PCLS is the first company to open in the city's new business park off Red River Road.
The company plans to add 50 to 100 more jobs.
