YMCA employee under investigation for hidden camera

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators said an employee at the YMCA Lake Wylie branch at 4036 Charlotte Highway put a camera in the women's locker room that went undetected for weeks.

John Eddy cleaned the YMCA at night.

"That's terrible," Patricia Mahoney said. "Thank God we haven't been in the locker room yet."

She recently joined the Y and comes with her family.

"Especially cause I'm walking in there with my 15-year-old daughter, very scary," Mahoney said.

Many Y members are frightened because investigators said the camera Eddy put in the women's locker room had files dating back to May.

The YMCA told Eyewitness News there were no photos on the device, but the investigation is ongoing. Investigators said they couldn't comment on video or pictures that were taken.

"It's very scary," Mahoney said. "And it's unfortunate for all the members that had to go through that, because now they have to worry about what they were doing in that locker room and what does he have on tape."

How Eddy actually got the camera into the locker room is clear, according to investigators, who said he actually videotaped himself putting the camera in, which is how they were able to find and arrest him on the same day a manager saw the camera.

"I'm glad he's out of there," Mahoney said. "He should be in jail for doing such a thing."

Eyewitness News called Eddy's home. A woman answered and said she'd give him the message. Channel 9 has not heard back yet. Eddy has been charged with voyeurism, and investigators said more charges are likely.
