CHARLOTTE — Watch out for con artists emailing you, saying they are with Duke Energy.
Action 9 has told you about scammers calling people. Now this winter they're emailing instead.
Here's how it works.
The scammers email you. They say they are with Duke Energy.
They ask the question: "Is your Duke Energy bill due tomorrow?"
They threaten to cut off your power in an hour if you do not pay right away.
The company says it doesn't operate that way.
"That is something Duke Energy would never do," Duke spokesperson Meghan Lynn Musgrave said. "[You] will never receive one single notification about turning off power within an hour."
If you really think you owe Duke money, call the company. The number may depend on where you live. Do not use any phone number in that email, only use the one on your actual bill.
