Senior-living residents say conditions are unsafe

CHARLOTTE — Some residents at the Poplar Grove apartments said their senior living complex isn’t safe. They said trash and dirt have been piling up for months and repair requests have not been answered.

“They don’t want to see that we’re real human beings,” resident Bunny Tannehill told Channel 9. “And we’re living here because we need a cheap place to live.”

A rep for the apartment’s parent company, PK Management, assured Channel 9 that the property is maintained. They also said all safety violations are addressed under the lease agreement.

A follow-up statement from PK Management says that a community meeting was held on Wednesday so residents could express their concerns. A member of management was also able to meet with Tannehill to discuss her concerns. PK Management says there weren’t any open requests for maintenance at that unit before Channel 9 reported on the issue, but work orders were created after managers visited the apartment. PK Management says a contractor has completed repairs in that apartment.

The management at the complex also told Channel 9 that they’re looking into “the feasibility of installing a push button system to replace the keyless fob system.” PK Management added that they’re working with local police to address the increased traffic by those experiencing homelessness. The property management is working to organize a National Night Out event at the complex on Aug. 2.
