Police: Chase led to morning crash, suspect faces multiple charges

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The end of a police pursuit on Saturday morning caused a multiple vehicle accident in Huntersville, according to police.

According to a release, the Cornelius Police Department received information of a wanted person staying at the Days Inn at 19901 Holiday Lane in Cornelius. The suspect fled from officers and a pursuit ensued on Interstate 77 north from exit 28.

Police said the suspect vehicle exited the interstate at exit 33, traveling north on Highway 21. The suspect attempted to do a U-turn and rammed a Cornelius police car. The suspect then got onto I-77 traveling south. At mile marker 24 the suspect crossed over the grassy median and began traveling north. He got off at exit 25 in Huntersville.

The suspect began traveling south on Statesville Road, according to police. At the 15900 block of Statesville Road the suspect crossed the centerline, striking two oncoming vehicles. There was a third vehicle involved in the crash but not struck by the wanted man's vehicle.

Six people, including the suspect, were transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment. Three of the patients had serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. The Huntersville Police Department is investigating the crash.

Two Cornelius police officers were also treated and released for injuries sustained during the chase and apprehension of the suspect.

Jeffrey Wayne Greene, of Charlotte, is the suspect in the chase and was wanted on a parole violation. Once he is released from the hospital, he will face additional charges related to the pursuit and crash.

Police said he also had the following active arrest warrants:

In Mecklenburg County, Greene is wanted for two counts of assault on a government official, two counts of injury to personnel property, two counts of hit/run fail to stop property damage, one count of larceny of property/possession of stolen property, one count of resisting a public officer and one count of flee/elude arrest.

In Lincoln County, Greene is wanted on one count of obtaining property by false pretense.

In York County, South Carolina, Greene is wanted on one felony count of obtaining property by false pretense.
