Sheriff: Man wielding gun on ATV sparks Stanly County manhunt

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A nearly six-hour manhunt in Stanly County ended with one man in custody Saturday.

Chris Carlton Snuggs, 32, of Oakboro, is facing several charges after leading law enforcement on a chase through the woods on his ATV, investigators said.

Deputies were called to Snuggs' home on Lakewood Drive around noon after neighbors called 911 and said Snuggs was armed and possibly under the influence of drugs while driving his ATV in the area.

Deputies responded and said they made contact with Snuggs, at which point he drove into a heavily wooded area near his home.

This sparked an hours-long manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies.

The Stanley County sheriff said approximately 20 officers, with the help of at least two K-9 units and a highway patrol helicopter, helped search 4 square miles of woods and heavy brush.

The sheriff said he later got a call that Snuggs had showed up to Stanly Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Deputies responded and placed Snuggs under arrest. The sheriff said Snuggs will have a mental health evaluation before being booked into the Stanly County Jail.

This is the second time in two weeks Snuggs has been arrested.

Snuggs caused a school lockdown on May 6 at West Stanly High School after he threatened someone nearby with a handgun, police said.

A landscaper called 911 that morning and said Snuggs threatened him with that gun at a resident on East Red Cross Road in Oakboro.

After law enforcement arrived, the landscaper said Snuggs threatened to kill him.

Authorities and the landscaper later heard gunshots from where Snuggs was last seen.

The school was placed under lockdown during the search.

Snuggs was arrested later that morning.

He was charged with assault by pointing a gun.
