CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Cody Mobley, 22, showed Channel 9 the smashed head lights, tail lights and side mirror on his Toyota Camry.
Two Chesterfield County sheriff's deputies vandalized the car at the end of a high-speed chase on June 27.
Mobley has had his share of run-ins with police. He admitted to Channel 9 that he's never had a driver's license and got his first DUI arrest at 17 years old.
"I've done some things," Mobley said. "But I'm done with that now."
Deputies said last month they followed Mobley after he drove past them near Jefferson playing a very loud radio.
They pursued and he took off, running several stop signs. They eventually had to force him off the road onto the shoulder.
Mobley then resisted arrest and both officers had their body cameras ripped off during the struggle with him, deputies said.
They said they found open beer cans in the car and also charged Mobley with DUI after he refused a breathalyzer test.
Before the car was towed from the scene, Sheriff Jay Brooks said the two deputies took out their frustration over the chase on the car.
The sheriff paid Mobley $1,500 to make repairs and fired both deputies, who initially lied about damaging the car.
"It was a very tough decision but we can't tolerate that," Brooks said. "They just lost their cool. There's no excuse for it."
Mobley admitted he shouldn't have even been driving, much less failed to stop for police. Still, he said that doesn't excuse what the officers did.
"I'm glad they got fired. Maybe they won't do it to somebody else now," he said.
Brooks will not name the two deputies because no criminal charges were filed and it was handled as a personnel matter. Both had been on the force for several years without prior issues, the sheriff said.
Cameras did not capture the officers damaging the car, but investigators said there were several witnesses to the incident.
Court records show the charges against Mobley related to the chase have been dropped.
He said he's learned his lesson from all this.
"I'm on the right track now. I'm done," he said.
Court records also list Mobley as a habitual offender when it comes to driving without a license.
