Harris entered a QuikTrip on North Carolina Highway 49 around 6 a.m. and pointed a handgun at the cashier, the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office said.
He demanded that the cashier hand him money from the register and then fled when he got the money.
The cashier, identified in police reports at Jekario Jones, told Eyewitness News that he knew something was wrong by what the suspect was wearing.
"Guy comes in with a (hooded sweatshirt), a hat (and) a pair of shades on at 5:55 (a.m.)," said Jones.
Jones said he just started the job on Dec. 5. He said he followed what he learned in training and complied.
"He just said, 'Give me everything in the register and I'll leave,' so I just made sure I got out of the line of fire and did just that," Jones said.
He has a lengthy criminal history including drug and robbery charges dating back to 2008.
To report any information about the robbery, call the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at 704-920-3057 or Crime Stoppers at 704-932-7463. Officials are offering a reward of up to $1,000. All tipsters are anonymous.
