Shooting in southwest Charlotte becomes homicide investigation

CHARLOTTE, N.C — A shooting turned deadly five days after a man was shot Saturday afternoon in a grocery store on West Blvd in southwest Charlotte, police said.

Authorities said Gregory Brown died at Carolinas Medical Center Thursday after he was shot in Hanson’s Seafood and Grocery.

Police said evidence and information gathered during the investigation led detectives to identify Joshua Welch as the shooter. They said the two knew each other.

Detectives said they determined that Welch fled to West Virginia, where he was arrested without incident. Homicide detectives traveled to West Virginia, where they interviewed Welch. They’re in the process of extraditing Welch to Mecklenburg County.

Welch has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries, possession of a firearm by felon and murder.
