2nd arrest made after ’brazen’ double homicide outside east Charlotte mini-mart

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have made a second arrest a shooting on Oct. 19 outside an east Charlotte mini-mart left a man and a woman dead.

The shooting happened just after noon along Kilborne Drive, near Eastway Drive.

MEDIC said 26-year-old Dondrake Blackmoore man was pronounced dead at the scene and 27-year-old Jakailah Jackson died at the hospital.

Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting but told Channel 9 that both victims were in a car in the middle of the road when they were shot.

On Nov. 6, CMPD charged Jamaal Rashad Porterfield, 27, with felony accessory after the fact to murder. Porterfield was arrested during a traffic stop in Bluefield, West Virginia. He will be extradited back to Mecklenburg County.

On Oct. 21, CMPD said 22-year-old Xaveon Dunn was charged for both murders. Police said tips from the community helped lead to his arrest.

Dunn has been charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“To have something like this happen in broad daylight seems to be pretty brazen,” said CMPD Maj. Cecil Brisbon. “It’s one of those things you can’t wrap your mind around.”

From Chopper 9, several different agencies could be seen responding to the scene, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Charlotte Fire and MEDIC. Caution tape was also seen wrapped around the gas station and convenience store.

“It’s very disheartening because it happens a lot in this area, and a lot more than it should,” said neighbor Emma Biggs.

Biggs lives in the neighborhood and heard the sirens. She said she came by to see what happened and found one of the victim’s family members.

“She was over they’re crying by herself and she just broke down,” Biggs told Channel 9. “I couldn’t stand to see her cry by herself like that. I just went and rubbed her back and said a prayer for her.”
