SALISBURY, N.C. — A local veteran was buried at the Salisbury National Cemetery on Wednesday. There were no family members at the service, but a group of women were there to pay their respects.
Rita Honeycutt is the veteran service officer for Randolph County. She says someone notified her office about Angelmaria Duff, who died in June following surgery from a service-connected disability.
Duff served two years in the Army during the 1970s.
Honeycutt says she tried for two months to contact Duff’s family, but her calls went unanswered, leaving the veteran’s remains unclaimed.
“She’s a sister to us, even though we never knew her,” Honeycutt said.
