South Carolina creates new mental health crisis hotline

SOUTH CAROLINA — South Carolina has created a new crisis hotline to help those struggling with mental health, including suicide.

The State Department of Mental Health says the hotline will help figure out if someone is calling for crisis, an emergency, or just looking for information.

Once that is determined, a mental health team will be on the scene within an hour.

"It helps to cut down the amount of time that law enforcement is on the scene. It helps get that person to the appropriate level of care," Director of the SC Dept. of Mental Health Amanda Gilchrist said.

The new crisis hotline number is 833-364-2274.

You can call this number 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.
