WAXHAW, N.C. — A school in Union County will temporarily close for in-person learning after four positive COVID-19 cases were reported.
According to Union County Public Schools, in consultation with the health department, the decision has been made to close South Providence School in Waxhaw for students and staff starting Wednesday until Oct. 6.
Officials said 4 positive cases have been reported in association with the school, and that several students and staff members may have been exposed to the virus.
While the school is closed, all students and staff will work remotely under Plan C until the school reopens on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

In a release, Union County Public Schools said its staff is working with those who tested positive to determine who they may have been in close contact with.
Citing NC General Statute 115C-21A, the school district cannot publicly identify those who tested positive.
The school board said it is following guidance from the Union County Health Department to address the cases and that if a student had direct contact with those who tested positive, a school nurse or a Union County Public Health staff member will follow up with parents.
School leaders said they are following cleaning protocols and will properly disinfect and sanitize the affected areas of the building according to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
