CHARLOTTE — Police believe drinking and speeding may have led to a crash that killed a man Monday night in western Mecklenburg County.
The wreck happened around 9:40 p.m. on Charlie Hipp Road, near Moores Chapel Road, west of Interstate 485.
When officers got to the crash site, they found a 2005 Dodge Dakota that was on its roof on the side of the road.
The driver, 36-year-old Antwoin Boon, was pronounced dead by paramedics. He was the only person in the truck.
Detectives said the Dodge was heading west on Charlie Hipp Road when Boon ran off the right side of the road and hit a large rock, causing the truck to flip several times. Police said Boon was partially thrown from the vehicle during the crash.
Excessive speed is a contributing factor in the crash, and alcohol use is suspected as an additional contributing factor, according to investigators.
No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
