States track patients who have COVID-19 and were admitted for other reasons

Some states track COVID-19 patients who were admitted for other reasons rather than treatment for the virus.

The hospitals track a new category of patients who test positive for COVID-19, which are called incidental cases.

There are currently two states that track people who go to the hospital for other reasons, like a broken leg, only to test positive for COVID-19.

Most patients in New York who went to the hospital for COVID-19, at 55%, but 44% had no idea they had COVID-19 and tested positive after they arrived.

In Massachusetts, the numbers are much closer with 49% of COVID-19 patients who went to the hospital for treatment and 50% had no idea they had the virus and tested positive after arrival.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services doesn’t track incidental cases, regardless of how a COVID-19 patient gets in the hospital.
