STATESVILLE, N.C. — Officials said a teacher's assistant at a Statesville elementary school has been fired for assaulting a student.
Genetta Dobbins was arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor assault on a child under 12.

Officials haven't released much information about what led to the alleged assault but did say it happened during school and involved a student at East Iredell Elementary School, where Dobbins worked.
Dobbins was suspended with pay Thursday and fired Friday.
She has worked with the Iredell-Statesville School District since Sept. 9.
