Students remember teenager killed Sunday in shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — K.C. Curry loved laughing and lived for cars.

On Sunday, he was hunched over his friend's Mustang, working on the car's sound system. Moments later, shots rang out on normally quiet Northgate Trail Drive.

"I ran out, and he was already laying down there at the edge of the (driveway)," said Linda Mackey.

Mackey didn't hear the shots, but her son did. He was good friends with Curry, and it was his car they were working on.

"My son came in for a minute and heard the gunshots," Mackey said. "Different neighbors and even (Curry's mother), I think, tried CPR on him."

There was nothing anyone could do to save the 17-year-old. He died before an ambulance arrived.

Police have not released any information on potential suspects or a motive in the case. By all accounts, Curry was a great neighbor, son to a single mother and a fun-loving student.

"It's been a shock to everyone," said Quentin Comer, a friend of Curry's from Charlotte United Christian Academy.

The private school of just 100 students cancelled most classes Monday and allowed students to use the time for prayer and conversation.

"We knew K.C. well. He was a part of us," said Kim Kyle, one of Curry's teachers at CACU. "It's kind of like a family, and we will grieve this loss as a family."
