KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Kannapolis business owners said two masked men broke into their stores early Wednesday morning, getting away with thousands of dollars in cash and leaving behind a lot of damage.
Surveillance video from Carniceria Acapulco on South Cannon Boulevard shows two people in masks hiding behind dumpsters around 2:30 a.m. The video then shows them setting up a makeshift wall with pallets and poster board to hide behind while they drilled into the back, metal door with some kind of tool.
The robbers eventually made their way inside to search for cash. One of the men removed his mask, revealing his face. The pair stuffed the money inside their pockets, then left through the back door.
In all, the store owner said they stole around $300, but left behind more than $1,000 in damages.
The Kannapolis Police Department told Channel 9 the robbery could be related to another one that happened a few miles south on Cannon Boulevard, an hour later.
Employees at La Huasteca Story #1 said a pair of robbers drilled through their back door around 3:30 a.m. They said the pair took their time inside the store, eventually getting away with around $3,500 in cash and $700 in merchandise.
La Huasteca sits right beside a busy Food Lion shopping center. Channel 9 spoke with the manager of El Amigo, a Mexican restaurant there, who said the robberies don’t surprise him.
“They’re everywhere right now,” Alonso Lopez said. “Just take care of business, with alarms and cameras, you know? You can do anything now.”
Kannapolis Police are investigating both incidents and looking to see if they could be tied to other crimes in the area. If you recognize either person, give investigators a call at 704-920-4000.
