DENVER, N.C. — A swimming advisory was issued Tuesday afternoon for a sewage spill into Lake Norman.
Lincoln County Health Director Margaret Dollar issued the advisory for the Eastwind Cove Subdivision, where approximately 100 gallons of untreated sewage is reported to have possibly leaked into a cove.
According to officials, the spill was caused by a power failure at a nearby sewage pump station, which led to a pump failure and a manhole overflow.
Officials said the flow has been stopped and workers of the Lincoln County Public Works Department are taking samples to determine the level of potential bacterial infection in Lake Norman.
The health director said that the area may be contaminated with fecal coliform, and is advising all residents and lake visitors to avoid swimming in or touching the water.
No swimming advisory signs have been posted at Lake Norman, officials said, but an alert was sent out to residents of affected properties and people living near the sewage spill site.
Officials said the Lincoln Public Works Department will continue testing the water and will notify the Health Department once it’s safe to resume lake activities.
The swimming advisory will remain in effect until at least two consecutive water samples show fecal coliform counts of less than 200 milliliters at all testing sites, officials said, which is in line with a state guideline per the Mooresville Regional Office and the North Carolina Division of Environmental Management.
