Teens on e-scooter struck by SUV in Myers Park

CHARLOTTE — Two teens on an electric scooter in Myers Park were struck by an SUV that briefly stopped and kept going.

Nichole Kovacs said her 14-year-old son, Sheldon, spends most of his time playing outside.

“I can’t keep him home,” the mother said. “You know, like I said, he’s more of the social type. Video games who are only on rainy days or like when he’s absolutely hurt.”

Kovacs said the injuries from the e-scooter crash will keep Sheldon indoors for the next few weeks.

Sheldon and a friend were riding the e-scooter at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near Selwyn and Ridgewood avenues in Myers Park when they were hit by the SUV, Kovacs said.

Sheldon told officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department the driver who hit them drove off.

“If the guy was going, you know, five (mph) faster, it could have been a lot worse than what it was,” Kovacs said.

The driver stopped but didn’t stay long.

“Apparently the guy opened his door, asked him if he was OK,” Kovacs said. “Sheldon responded something along the lines of, ‘Hey, dude, you could kill someone.’ And the guy was like, ‘Well, it’s your fault.’ Shut the door and drove off.”

Kovacs said her son is out of the hospital after being injured.

His friend had cuts and bruises.

Kovacs wants the driver to turn himself in.

“It’s the lack of empathy and the lack of apology that I struggle with the most,” the mother said. “You left my kid in the street.”

E-scooter operators must be 16 or older, according to North Carolina law.

Charlotte’s city ordinance allows just one person on a scooter at a time.

Anyone with information should contact CMPD.
