TEGA CAY, S.C. — Tega Cay's police chief wants his officers armed with assault rifles, despite the city being one of the safest in South Carolina.
Chief Steve Parker requested $7,000 for M4 rifles. The city already has nine rifles, but few officers are trained to use them.
Parker said that with recent police shootings nationwide, officers can no longer wait for SWAT teams to arrive before taking action.
"It used to be, SWAT teams were waited on. Well, meantime, that could be 20 or 30 more people dying," Parker said.
Tega Cay's Town Council will vote on the issue next month.
