‘In this together’: Habitat for Humanity chapter requires volunteers to be vaccinated

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Habitat for Humanity of York County are bringing back volunteers to complete projects that were halted by the pandemic.

Those who want to volunteer are required to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

“Part of the check-in process, they’ll show that vaccination card,” said Tim Veeck, executive director at the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. “We’re not making copies of it. We’re not looking to hold people’s health information. We just need to see that they have had that.”

Masks will also be required to work on-site.

Veeck hopes the vaccine mandate doesn’t discourage people from volunteering, because many different community groups take part in habitat projects.

Cathi Irvin’s home was built in 2019, but Habitat had to pull the brakes on her neighbor’s home because of COVID-19.

“I imagine for some of the homeowners, it was getting discouraging, because they were ready to move and get into their homes,” Irvin said.

Irvin said Habitat’s safety requirement is the best step to get back to normal.

“We’re all in this together. We have to protect each other,” Irvin said.
