Community to say goodbye to Union County deputy killed in off-duty motorcycle crash

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A community will say goodbye Wednesday to a Union County sheriff’s deputy, who was killed last weekend in an off-duty motorcycle crash.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash happened just before 6 p.m. last Saturday on Griffith Road in Monroe.

Deputy Christopher Scott Horne, 50, died after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle.

“Deputy Sheriff Horne was a valued member of the Sheriff’s Office SAFE (Sheriff’s Alcohol Field Enforcement) Unit. He served with the agency for over 7 years but also previously served with the Monroe Police Department, Waxhaw PD as well as the Stallings PD. He will be greatly missed,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

Officials have not said how the crash happened but that troopers are investigating.

Horne served Union County for seven years. Before that, he worked for Monroe Police, Stallings and Waxhaw Police.

He will be laid to rest Wednesday morning at Lakeland Memorial Park.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 9 a funeral procession will travel down Highway 84 to Lancaster Highway before reaching the cemetery.
