Verdict reached in trial of man accused of robbery, shooting at DMV

MONROE, N.C. — It only took a jury 45 minutes to decide that a Monroe man was guilty of masterminding a robbery at a Monroe license plate agency and nearly killing an employee.

Melvin Luckey was guilty on all counts.

After nearly three full weeks of trial, jurors made short work of reaching a verdict – convicting Luckey on eight counts, including attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy.

Police arrested Luckey in November 2010 after they said he and another man plotted to rob a Monroe license plate office.

During the robbery, police said Crystal and Robbie Jordan were shot by Luckey's accomplice, Otis Howie .Jr.

The bullets nearly killed Crystal and permanently disabled her. Billy was shot in the face and arm and still bears a massive scar.

Police said Luckey drove the getaway car back to Charlotte.

As the verdict was read, Crystal Jordan wiped tears from her eyes, but Luckey had no visible reaction.

Prosecutors did not want to comment after the verdict because they want to wait for sentencing tomorrow.

The jurors will hear evidence about aggravating factors, including Luckey's extensive criminal history.
