Volunteers turned away attempting to pick up trash at NC national park

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Volunteers wanting to collect trash at a national park in Greensboro, North Carolina were shocked that they were turned away.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park has not been properly maintained during the government shutdown.

Saturday, a group of volunteers were told not to pick up trash by someone with the National Park Service.

Despite that, the group continued to clean the park.

"I enjoy the park. And things that are important to me and that I enjoy, and that are important to people I care about, I want to help take care of," volunteer Susan Hogarth said.

A sign at the park's entrance reads "closed" and people who enter should be caution because the park cannot help visitors.
