Where Charlotte ranks among these hotbeds for high-wage jobs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queen City is a hotbed for white-collar jobs, according to a recent article in Forbes.

Business service jobs in metro Charlotte jumped 26.6% from 2012-17 — and 2.1% in 2017 — to total 201,700. That was enough to rank it eighth on a recent list of cities creating the most jobs in that sector.

The piece reinforces the notion that jobs in the professional and business services sector are continuing to move away from the downtowns of major economic engines like New York and San Francisco to other parts of the country. That sector represents the largest category of high-wage jobs, posting an annual average salary of $60,446 versus the $48,115 average of a nonfarm job, the article continues.

In addition to Charlotte, Raleigh made an appearance on the list at No. 9. The authors credit “fast-growing tech sectors and strong domestic in-migration” for both metros ranking high for creation of white-collar professions.
