Woman accused of leading deputies on 120 mph chase after shooting at stranger

Kyla Clayton (Chester County Sheriff's Office)

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A woman is behind bars after authorities said she opened fire on a stranger before leading deputies on a high-speed chase Thursday morning in Chester County.

According to the sheriff’s office, a Chester County resident spotted a reckless driver around 8:10 a.m. on JA Cochran Bypass in Chester. That resident then began following the car and called 911.

During the 911 call, the alleged reckless driver, 48-year-old Kyla Clayton, pulled over and fired several shots at the caller before speeding off, officials said.

As Clayton passed the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, deputies got behind her and pulled her over. During the traffic stop, as deputies were walking to her car, Clayton sped off and a chase began.

During the pursuit, deputies said Clayton hit another vehicle near the intersection of Dawson Drive and Lowry’s Highway before heading north into York County at speeds faster than 120 mph. Authorities said as the chase continued on Highway 321, Clayton sped past a school bus and ran several vehicles off the road.

The pursuit ended at the York County Government Center where Clayton was arrested without further incident. After the chase, three handguns, a rifle, and two bags of ammunition were found in her vehicle, deputies said.

Clayton did not fire shots at law enforcement and nobody was injured during the chase.

Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
