Muslim woman escorted out of Trump rally after silent protest

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Officials escorted out a Muslim woman silently protesting at the Donald Trump rally Friday night in Rock Hill.

Rose Hamid told Channel 9 she's not even sure why she was asked to leave.

Hamid, who was wearing a shirt emblazoned with "I come in peace" and a badge that read "Muslim," is hoping all the attention brings awareness to what she calls the "dangers" of the Republican presidential candidate's rhetoric.

Officials explained the rally rules to the crowd before Trump even took the stage at Winthrop Coliseum.

"As we all know, as president, Trump will respect everyone's right to the First Amendment, almost as much as the Second Amendment," the announcer at Winthrop said.

As for any protesters, the announcer had this to say before Trump took the stage:

"Everyone has a right to free speech and we have provided a nice lovely spot outside where they could do that all they want," the announcer said.

Hamid said she went to the rally with a message of peace.

She had no plans to speak out, and said she never did.

"I thought it might be a really goodwill gesture to get a personal face to what a Muslim can look like," Hamid said.

She and a friend also went to the event to stand in silent protest if Trump said anything they felt was hateful toward any group of people.

"I wasn't being disrespectful or saying anything, I just wanted to make a statement, a silent statement, hate mongering is not who we are," Hamid said.

Hamid told Channel 9 she's not sure if what she was wearing got the attention of police or if it was something around her.

But, before she knew it, police were asking her to leave and people around her started yelling.

"'Get out of here, get out of here.' I looked at him and I said, 'You don't even know me, why are you behaving this way?'" Hamid said.

Hamid said she was told if she didn't leave the property, she would be arrested.

Channel 9 asked if she wanted an apology from Trump.

"I think he needs to apologize to all people who have been mistreated. When you incite people to hate the other, whoever the other is, that's a problem," Hamid said.
