Woman held at gunpoint at SouthPark area apartment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a 40-year-old woman was walking into her home at Alexander Place Apartments on Monday night, and two men were already inside.

She told police one man grabbed her by the neck from behind and put a gun to her head. He pushed her down on a couch demanding money. She heard a second man rummaging through another room.

Both men ran after taking jewelry and cash.

Alexander Place Apartments on Quail Hollow Road is a very low-crime area. Only two violent crimes have been reported in the past year, within a half mile of the complex.

One resident, Allison Varner, said she's never doubted her safety at the South Park area apartment.

"I love this area because I’ve never had to question it. Never had that thought in my mind that could happen," she said.

As of late Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police had no suspects, and they were still investigating the robbery.

The manager at Alexander Place told Channel 9 that residents in the 309 units will get an email explaining what happened and urging them to take precautions.

They expected that email to be sent by the end of the day Tuesday.

"It’s very upsetting to us that this happened. We are glad there was no physical injury. Since we bought the property in 2011, there has not been an incident like this one," said Patrick Rini, a spokesman for the Connor Group, a Dayton, Ohio company which owns Alexander Place Apartments.

Erin Catz has lived there for nearly a year. She feels like the complex manager will keep this from happening again.

"Knowing that that has happened, it is a little concerning, but I’m sure we'll all take more precautions," she said.

Channel 9 reached out to the victim and her family Tuesday.  Her husband said they did not want to comment about what happened.
