York County mother charged after baby tests positive for cocaine

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A York County newborn baby that tested positive for cocaine is in the hospital, and the mother has been charged with child neglect.

Channel 9's partners at The Herald said deputies investigated 31-year-old Candis Sheffield for more than a month after the child was born.

Deputies were told about the positive test by South Carolina Department of Social Services agents.

The baby is now in DSS custody but remains hospitalized.

Sheffield’s arrest is the 10th time in the last six months a York County parent has been arrested for a child's positive drug test, according to South Carolina court records and police from York County, Clover and Rock Hill.

A conviction for felony child neglect carries up to 10 years in prison.

Sheffield is the York County jail pending a bond hearing.
