MORGANTON, N.C.,None — A Morganton home destroyed by a falling tree has been declared unsafe, and public safety officers have cordoned off the area because they are concerned the home could collapse from the weight of the tree.
Lisa Lopez said she was in the shower when the tree came crashing down on her home.
She said she was able to squeeze through an opening in the bathroom to free herself, but everything inside was destroyed.
The National Weather Service issued a strong wind warning for most of the mountain counties. That warning expired early Wednesday afternoon, but the wind remains strong through Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties.
Lopez said neighbors helped her out of her home.
She is giving thanks her 8-year-old son was not home at the time, but her Thanksgiving meal was ruined. She had already started her cooking.
Public safety officers said no one will be allowed back into the home. They have called in the Red Cross to help Lopez and her son, who will now need to find somewhere else to live.
